Welcome to Coffee & Civics!

Since I started this effort over a year ago after prodding from former students, public interest has spread beyond expectations. Thank you for your interest in this effort to help the community gain a clearer picture of national security issues and foreign affairs. My goal is to bring people together to understand the stakes, the players, the motivations, and potential outcomes.

Another purpose is to encourage people to come together in a shared forum to learn beyond the headlines and the biased reporting of the news and the opinions in social media.

My two decades in the military, from air bases overseas to the E-ring of the Pentagon and meeting rooms of NATO decision-makers and other key locales, gave me access to American political and military leaders as they engaged their counterparts in other countries. Regardless of which political party was in charge, their interests to serve the American people were always the same but their strategies were varied. Understanding those different approaches to the same goals is essential.

Coffee and Civics is an effort to understand the stakes and the strategies.
